ED Medical Officer (EDMO) opportunities

Available from August 2024 onwards

Contract terms = Min. 6 months up to 2 years

Western Health is a major tertiary health service serving a diverse, multicultural and multilingual community in the rapidly growing western suburbs of Melbourne. It operates three Emergency Departments (ED) at the Footscray, Sunshine and Williamstown campuses.

The newly completed expansion of the Sunshine Emergency Department includes a large uplift in both clinical spaces and associated workforce, new resuscitation spaces, fast track, short-stay, paediatric hubs, a Behavioural Assessment Unit and a Crisis Hub. The construction of the New Footscray Hospital is also underway with completion projected for 2025.

The ED Medical Officer (EDMO) role offers a unique opportunity to join a growing and dedicated Emergency team. EDMO positions are rotated across two campuses (Sunshine and Footscray).  Both Emergency Departments (ED) are accredited by ACEM (Australasian College for Emergency Medicine) for Advanced Training as urban district sites. Together they see over 110,000 adult and paediatric patients, with exposure to a diverse and interesting case mix in a well-supported environment with access to all major surgical and medical specialties.

Both sites are supported by active on the floor Consultant leadership, supervision and education from 0800hrs – 2400hrs, seven days a week. As an EDMO, you will always be supported by an ED Registrar overnight. A dedicated ED HMO education program is delivered weekly. For those pursuing additional qualifications, completion of the ACEM Certificate or Diploma is well supported. Quality and research activities are also supported for those interested in research through the Joseph Epstein Centre for Emergency Medicine Research.

The ED Medical Officer role is ideal for those with 2 or more years’ post-graduate experience, wanting a broad emergency medicine experience, without yet being committed to a career in ED. It provides an opportunity to complete an Australian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM) Certificate or Diploma, and obtain further experience prior to becoming an ED Registrar. It also provides an excellent and well supported position for GP trainees and other doctors wanting to expand their emergency medicine skills.

For those wanting to live in Melbourne and be part of a great team whilst experiencing exciting medicine and interesting pathology, come west of the Maribyrnong - we look forward to welcoming you to our fun and committed family!
