Position Summary

About the Role

Western Health has approximately 55 Hospital Medicine Officer (PGY3+) General Training Stream positions suitable for applicants who have at least two years of medical experience.

Western Health offers a supported training environment where Senior Medical Staff make an effort to know you personally. Junior doctors in the General Training Stream are supported by a dedicated Director of Clinical Training (Dr Jonathan Kaufman) and Medical Education Officer (Ms Amy Busby).

Western Health offers the following rotations as a PGY3+ HMO in the General Training Stream.

  • Emergency Medicine 
  • Intensive Care
  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology 
  • Paediatrics
  • Psychiatry
  • Medical specialities (Cardiology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Oncology)
  • Aged Care, Subacute Care & Rehabilitation
  • Palliative Care
  • Electronic Medical Record
  • Nights/Reliever

Every effort will be made to provide rotations of your choice – taking into consideration your career interests, training requirements, previous experience and demands of particular rotations. However this is not a guarantee as this is dependent on the group of successful applicants and final rotation preferences. All HMOs will be assigned a combined annual leave/nights/relieving term during the year. 

We have a strong focus on junior doctor education with a dedicated weekly intern and HMO education program, simulation and workshops for junior doctors, hospital grand rounds and a broad range of unit-specific education sessions. The Western Centre for Health Research and Education (WCHRE) at the Sunshine Hospital campus is a purpose built teaching and research facility, including a state-of-the-art simulation centre.

To be Successful in this Role you:

  • Hold unconditional General Registration with AHPRA
  • Have completed a minimum of 2 years FT medical employment post Primary Medical Degree (MBBS)  

Important information for International Medical Graduates (IMGs). To be eligible to apply as an IMG, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold unconditional General Medical Registration with the Australian Medical Board (AHPRA) or;
  • Hold Provisional General Registration (Competent Authority Pathway) or Limited Registration (Standard Pathway or Short Term Training Pathway) AND;
  • Nearing completion of board requirements which will grant you General Registration by the beginning of February 2022 
  • Clinical experience within the Australian Medical Hospital System for at least 12 months is required, two or more years is highly desirable 
  • Hold Australian permanent residency or citizenship
