About Us
Western Health manages three acute public hospitals: Footscray, Sunshine and Williamstown Hospital. It also operates the Sunbury Day Hospital, Transition Care at Hazeldean and a range of community based services. We care for a culturally diverse population of more than 800,000 people. We have more than 6,700 employees who are driven by our values of ‘Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence and Safety’ (CARES).
Our continued growth will see the completion of a new purpose built, multi-storey Joan Kirner Women's and Children's Hospital.
About the Role
Applications are invited for additional positions of Intensive Care Registrars at Western Health (WH) commencing February 2019. These are new positions consequent to the scheduled expansion of clinical services at Sunshine Hospital in 2019. They would ideally suit a mid to senior CICM trainee looking to further their skills in critical care ultrasound, clinical education & simulation or clinical leadership. There may also exist the opportunity to offer transition year training to suitable applicants.
These positions are based at Sunshine Hospital. The 13 bed ICU at Sunshine Hospital opened in March 2015 and provides care for over 1100 patients a year. The unit is accredited by CICM for General Training (post-2014 training system) and C12 (pre-2014 training system). The Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s extension to Sunshine Hospital will be commissioned in 2019. The Western Clinical School & the North West Academic Centre of the University of Melbourne are based at Sunshine Hospital, and we are also affiliated with Notre Dame University.
Western Health provides care to one of the most culturally diverse & rapidly growing metropolitan regions of Australia. Our registrars gain a wide range of experience in adult intensive care medicine in a supportive and collaborative environment. Our case mix includes a variety of emergency and elective admissions including an increasing amount of obstetric medicine at Sunshine Hospital (which currently delivers around 5,500 babies per year). Our patients are relatively young with a high severity of illness compared with other metropolitan ICUs. All surgical services (with the exception of Cardiac Surgery and cranial Neurosurgery) are represented at Western Health’s ICUs.
Critical Care Ultrasound Training Opportunities
Western Health ICU has a structured critical care US training program led by an ICU consultant with a Diploma in Diagnostic Ultrasound (DDU). Multiple consultants in the group have an echo qualification and contribute to the teaching. The training experience is enhanced by the unit’s collaborative relationship with WH cardiology department and the opportunity to attend their training sessions. All studies completed in ICU are reported through the Synapse reporting system and a verification process is in place for trainees learning US.
Thus, opportunity exists for ICU trainees to pursue a qualification in critical care US including the DDU with support and supervision available from the ICU consultants.
Clinical Education & Simulation
WH ICU runs a comprehensive, consultant led registrar teaching program. The weekly educational activities include a protected registrar teaching session, consultant led primary exam teaching, journal club, echo teaching and morbidity & mortality audits. Multiple consultants in the group have qualifications in Clinical Education and simulation delivery. Hence the teaching sessions are interactive, learner oriented and frequently involve simulation sessions, either in-situ or in the state-of-the-art simulation centre at Sunshine Hospital.
Trainees wishing to develop a portfolio in clinical education and simulation will have plenty of opportunity to develop their skills by contributing to the education program. Opportunity also exists to develop skills in simulation delivery by teaching on the courses in the simulation centre (for example the BASIC course, ALS 1 & 2 courses, and the PROMPT course are run several times per year). Registrars also have the opportunity to attend WH and external VICEN days. If the trainee wishes to take up a formal education qualification, they will be supported through this.
Research opportunities
The Department of Intensive Care is actively involved in research. We are a member of the ANZICS Clinical Trials Group, with several dedicated research coordinators and a research program including large ANZICS trials as well as local studies. Trainees are encouraged to participate in research, and the opportunity exists to complete your formal project under the supervision of experienced and enthusiastic Intensivists.
Clinical Leadership
The trainee will be supported in this role and provided the opportunity to develop not only their clinical skills but also skills in leading and managing teams. They will be encouraged to take an active part in the daily running of the ICU and take part in the daily decision-making process.
