About the Role

There are 2 Senior HMO (O&G) positions, each comprising 12 months at Sunshine Hospital. The year comprises of a combination of the following attachments and training opportunities within the O&G Unit:

  • Supervised Elective Caesarean Section (ECS) training – a Senior HMO (O&G) will be rostered to the ECS lists, shared with Level 1 ITP trainees and GP obstetricians rotating through Sunshine Hospital.
  • Birthing Suite – the SHMO will share responsibility for the acute obstetric service (Birth Suite and Patient Care Centre), gaining skills in primary assessment, labour management, operative vaginal delivery and emergency obstetric procedures.
  • Supervised training in minor gynaecological surgical procedures
  • Rostered night duty (including acute gynaecology and peri-operative patient care).
  • Opportunities to participate in educational, training and audit activities
  • Research opportunities in both Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

These positions are most suited to applicants who plan a career in O&G, and intend applying to RANZCOG for entry to the FRANZCOG Training Program in the year following the Senior HMO appointment.

Eligibility criteria are:

  1. PGY 2 or above at time of application.
  2. Minimum 6 months prior O&G experience.

The selection process for these positions is highly competitive. The positions are awarded on the basis of CV, references and interview. Shortlisting for interview is based on CV and referee report, so it is important that applicants highlight on their CV all relevant clinical experience, courses, academic awards/honours, research experience and other hospital involvement.

The O&G Unit at Sunshine Hospital aims for excellence in specialist O&G training, and the successful applicant(s) for the Senior HMO (O&G) can expect:

  • Excellent broad exposure to the discipline in preparation for the 6 year FRANZCOG Training program.
  • Opportunities during the 12 month appointment to work at Junior Registrar level (leave cover etc)
  • Conditional on meeting the standards outlined in the Position Description PD – Senior HMO, the incumbent can expect to be supported in their career aspirations, including application through the RANZCOG ITP Training Program National Selection process.
