About the role

The role of the Medical Education Officer (MEO) encompasses aspects of educational design, educational delivery and pastoral care.

This role is particularly focused on supporting PGY2s and other non vocational doctors who rotate through paediatrics, women’s health, emergency, anaesthesia and other medical specialties, with a view to specialising in one of these hospital disciplines or other disciplines such as psychiatry or general practice.

The MEO is responsible for facilitating the education of these prevocational doctors. Working under the broad direction of the Director of Medical Education (DME) and  the Director of Clinical Training JKWCH (DCT)  the MEO is responsible for leading the development, implementation and evaluation of a  medical education strategy that will assist the organisation to continue to provide quality services into the future.

The MEO also provides pastoral care and career development support for junior doctors, with the ability to refer to other resources as needed.

The MEO will ensure that all education and training activities are consistent with the best practice benchmark and contribute to the Western Health reputation and brand.

Essential Key Selection Criteria

  • Successful completion of a Bachelor of Nursing qualification or equivalent
  • Registration as a Registered Nurse in Australia
  • Experience in obstetrics, paediatrics, ED, anaesthesia or related field
  • Experience in developing, implementing and evaluating innovative education programs
  • Excellent organisational and stakeholder management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and ability to manage the performance of junior doctors
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team and autonomously
  • Demonstrated ability to work with AV and IT equipment required for education delivery, such as videoconferencing, web, distance education, and simulation.
  • Understanding of junior medical staff education and training requirements
  • Understanding of the requirements of the National Intern statements and the Australian Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors (ACFJD)
  • Competence in performing medical procedures including venepuncture, basic life support, catheterisation, cannulation, especially in an obstetric and/or paediatric population
  • Experience in conducting simulation programs especially obstetric and/or paediatric
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and willingness to attend up-skilling training programs
  • Licence to drive in Victoria and maintenance of a vehicle.

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification in nursing or related discipline
