Maternity Services – Registered Midwife

Western Health is seeking passionate Midwives to join our dynamic Maternity Services team.  Known for its strong midwifery culture and supportive environment, you will have the opportunity to flex your midwifery skills whilst working across the spectrum of maternity care.

Having recently expanded our service, we are now able to offer employment working in low-risk, all-risk or Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander (Galinjera) teams with the option of providing homebirth services.

Selection Criteria

  • Current certification through AHPRA as a “Registered Midwife”
  • A minimum 12 months experience as a Registered Midwife in an Australian hospital setting (not including placements).
  • Passionate about woman-centred care, advocacy and education
  • Possess excellent clinical skills, with sound ‘evidence based’ judgement
  • Demonstrated ability to practice collaboratively as part of a broader multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience and desire in undertaking professional development activities to maintain and enhance nursing / midwifery expertise.

Registered Midwife Pool

The Nursing & Midwifery Workforce Unit (NMWU) at Western Health are currently seeking highly motivated Registered Midwives to join our newly established Midwifery Pool team. Our Pool services aim to fill vacancies that arise across Western Health’s Maternity Services on a daily basis.

Working across our two clinical campus’ of Joan Kirner and Bacchus Marsh hospital enables you to enjoy variety and flexibility and experience both tertiary level maternity care, and low risk maternity care. Pool Midwives will be managed by the Nursing and Midwifery Workforce Unit (NMWU) and allow for the opportunity to work across a variety of wards instead of working exclusively in one area.

At Joan Kirner, you have the opportunity to work across areas such as:

  • Antenatal Clinic
  • Maternity Assessment Centre (MAC)
  • Birthing & High Care Unit (HCU)
  • Antental/Postnatal Maternity Wards

At Bacchus Marsh, you have the opportunity to work across areas such as:

  • Antenatal Clinic
  • Special Care Nursery
  • Maternity Ward – which encompasses Antenatal, Intrapartum and Postnatal Care

Working on Pool provides midwives a great opportunity to develop, consolidate and expand their clinical skills and to experience a variety of different work places.

Pool gives you the guarantee of contracted hours and shifts, while maintaining your low risk and tertiary skills.  It also allows you to quickly develop professional relationships, and feel part of a team! Pool has been shown to reduce the risk of burnout and improves workplace satisfaction as every day is different.

Flexible working arrangements will also be considered on an individual basis.

Our dedicated Women’s and Children’s tertiary-level facility at Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital stands 8 floors tall, proudly and passionately serving families of Melbourne’s western suburbs with quality and evidence-based care. The state-of-the-art facility with 26 large spacious birthing rooms with four having luxurious birthing pools makes women comfortable, secure and safe throughout their maternity experience.

Midwives are actively encouraged to up-skill, develop their critical thinking, take leadership roles and lead care planning with an emphasis on person-centred care. As a Registered Midwife (or Nurse/Midwife) you have the opportunity to work on rotation across areas such as:

  • Antenatal Clinic
  • Maternity Assessment Centre (MAC)
  • Birthing Suite & High Care Unit (HCU)
  • Postnatal Maternity Wards
  • Domiciliary team

Incorporating elements of each department is our well-established continuity of care model- ‘Midwifery Group Practice’ (MGP). Catering for approximately 14% of all birthing families at JKWCH, our MGP is the largest in Victoria.

$67,527.20 - $95,378.40 based on Experience per Nurses and Midwives (Victorian Public Health Sector) (single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement 2020-2024.
